FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF SALEM TRANSFER STATION
Northside Carting, along with the City of Salem, is moving forward with the development of the Salem Transfer Station. This will include capping of the ash landfill and construction of a new transfer station that will provide long term sustainable revenues generated for the City in excess of $225,000 per year through combined taxes and host community fees. In addition, Northside will contribute another $30,000 towards the Salem Education Fund each and every year.
Northside will support all of the expenses associated with the development of the project, most importantly the capping of the ash landfill. Currently, the ash landfill is under a consent order by the DEP and if it is not capped by the spring of 2009, the City will be facing daily fines of up to $2,000.00 per day. In order to support the expense, it is imperative that the current permit be increased from 100TPD to 400TPD, a minor modification, as defined by the DEP.
The project has been supported through the leadership of Mayor Kim Driscoll and her administration and is the result of an extensive RFP process that began in the spring of 2007. The project has met the approval of the DEP and the Salem Conservation Committee. Further approval must be gained from MEPA, the Salem Board of Health, and the Salem City Counsel.
We believe that this is a win-win for both Northside and the City and we are confident that with your support this important project for the future of the City will be moved forward. The continued services that the City residents now receive would continue, which include yard waste drop off, a new recycling drop-off center, free disposal of white goods, reduced rate per ton for disposal of solid waste, and more.
